The role of ocean ecosystems in removing carbon emissions has increasingly moved into the spotlight, along with the idea of markets to finance their protection.
Coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests, tidal marshes and seagrass meadows can protect coastlines from storms, rising sea-levels and shoreline erosion. They regulate water quality and provide habitat for fish, ensuring food security and livelihoods for local communities.
