Its findings show that between 2009 and 2018 there was a progressive loss of about 14 per cent of the coral from the world's coral reefs primarily caused by recurring, large-scale bleaching events. In all, about 11,700 square kilometres of hard coral, which is more than all the coral currently living on Australia's coral reefs, were lost.
