Synthesis of 14C-labelled polystyrene nanoplastics for environmental studies
Paradigms for assessing the potential environmental impacts of manufactured nanomaterials have been eloquently described. Among such nanomaterials, plastic particles exhibiting at least one dimension below 1 µm (i.e. so-called nanoplastics; NPs) have been reported to have the potential to become the most hazardous component of marine plastic litter. NPs are suspected to be released into the environment directly from their addition to a range of commercial products and by fragmentation of larger pieces of plastic litter. The potential impacts of the sizes of particles (i.e. nano-sizes) on their degradation, uptake and biodistribution in organisms have been the subject of several studies.
